Fun Activity Overview

As we stated in the About Page, Coral Reef TV is a unique website design that allows simple control and viewing of live nature streaming videos from the internet.  It's unique and user-friendly design allows anyone to quickly find, connect to and watch beautiful live nature streams from across the globe.  Anyone can use the system but it is especially designed for senior adults in a community living environment.  No internet or computer/tablet experience is required and no internal staff resources are needed to assist the user.  Creates a fun and amazing real-time connection to the natural world and brings a sense of joy and positive energy to the user.

Details of How it Works

The live nature videos can be accessed through a standard PC or tablet (we can provide the tablet or you can use your own 10" tablet) that connects to the facility guest Wi-Fi portal.  With our tablet, the Category Page will automatically display when the tablet is turned ON.  From the Category Page, users can select from 10 different categories and then select the specific live streaming feed they want to watch from that category. The live streaming video will then automatically start and display in a 3/4 full screen viewing window but can be adjusted to full screen for larger viewing.  Once on the website, all navigation is intuitive and self-explanatory.  Users can easily exit a video with one touch of our specially designed large exit button and go on to the next one.  The tablet we provide has an HDMI output that can be connected to a TV for large screen viewing if desired.

Content Features

Live streams are identified and hand-picked from thousands of live streams available so viewers don't have to try to search videos they wouldn't already know existed or know how to find on their own.  Examples of the approximately 100 streams available include:  SW Florida Bald Eagle Nest Cam, Sea Lion Colony Cam from Hanson Island BC, Brooks Falls Bears Cam from Katmai National Park, Monterey Bay Aquarium Jelly Fish Cam, Live Puppy Cam from the Warrior Canine Connection and the Hummingbird Feeder Cam from Studio City CA to just name a few.  In addition to these nature cams, we also feature other interesting live cams such as the live NASA International Space Station Cam for example.  The user will always have something fun to check out and never get bored with the vast selection to choose from.

Examples of Typical Uses

For senior living environments, residents can operate the tablet in their room or anywhere in the facility that has Wi-Fi coverage.  In their room, they can watch from their bed or a chair or they can connect to their in-room TV and keep the TV running showing their favorite live cam throughout the day instead of the TV playing disturbing news or showing a monotone daytime show.

Health Benefits   

Nature videos can provide an alternative to a standard TV that is left on one channel to play all day.  Videos of daily news events can be shocking and cause anxiety and depression.  Nature programming has been proven to reduce anxiety, create positive emotions and help with better eating and sleeping habits.  One example of a study from the University of California, Berkeley and BBC Earth shows that we can harness the mental health benefits of going outside and experiencing nature by simply watching wildlife videos.  There are countless examples of studies that detail the positive health benefits of watching nature videos and we can provide links to these studies if desired.

Advantages Over Other Nature Video Services

There are a multitude of other good nature streaming services out there that are designed to create a calming atmosphere and help to promote positive health outcomes.  While we do recommend these services for specific situations, we offer three advantages to the senior care environment that these other services don't offer. 

1) Live Streaming - We offer live streaming so viewers are engaged in real time viewing as it happens unlike other services that just offer recorded videos that run on a loop.  No other streaming service offers live content in the unique format provided by Coral Reef TV.  

2) User Controlled Content - Users can control what they see and easily toggle back and forth to watch all of their favorite live streams. They are not tied to watching whatever streaming video that happens to be playing at that time. 

3) Simplicity - Simple controls allow the user to access their favorite live streams in just three clicks from turning on the tablet and all controls are self explanatory and shown on the screen.   There is no complicated log-in procedure and no fixed equipment to install or maintain and no IT or staff help is required!
